Important of colostrum
Before calves are born, they are in a sterile environment, so disease
protection isn't necessary. The dam supplies all of the protection normally
needed before birth. The calf is born essentially devoid of antibodies.
During a calf's first twenty-four hours of life it can absorb whole antibodies
through its small intestine wall. These antibodies circulate in the animal's
bloodstream to help fight off diseases and infections during the first few
weeks of life.
